Espressif ESP32-WROOM-32
Dual-core Xtensa LX6 • 240MHz • 520KB SRAM
Powered by a single ESP32
Real-time audio decoding, Bluetooth A2DP streaming, a full Wi-Fi web server, a touchscreen UI with live visualizers and podcast management all run at the same time, on a single ESP32-WROOM-32 microcontroller.
No PSRAM. No external co-processors. We picked the most ordinary, easiest-to-buy chip we could and pushed it as far as it goes, because when the firmware goes public, being able to buy the parts is the whole point.
Built for builders
The standard ESP32 is one of the most widely available and affordable microcontroller platforms in the world. When the firmware becomes available for download, anyone with a compatible board and a handful of off-the-shelf components can build their own Fonix One. No hunting for rare or expensive parts.
- Compatible with widely available ESP32 dev boards
- Free firmware download, with unlock premium features for $12
- OTA firmware updates over Wi-Fi, no reflashing
A different kind of player
Most portable players run a stripped-down Android with a music app bolted on top. Fonix One is purpose-built firmware on dedicated hardware. Every line of code is there to play your music.
Generic Android DAPs
- Sluggish UI, from Android overhead on underpowered hardware
- Bloated with unused apps, services, and background processes
- Battery drained by an OS designed for phones
- Constant system updates that change or break things
- Abandoned after a year or two, with no more updates or support
- The same OS as every other player, in a different case
Fonix One
- Boots to music in under 2 seconds
- No operating system underneath, so nothing runs except the player
- 16+ hours of battery, because every milliamp goes to your music
- Bespoke firmware, built for one job
- Upload files, manage playlists and update firmware from any browser
- Does one thing, and keeps doing it
